* Works at three locations set for completion in Q1 of 2020
The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MoTC) is at an "advanced stage" of its 'Park and Ride' project – the Public Bus Infrastructure Programme, it has been announced.
'Park and Ride' provides free parking spaces adjacent to Doha Metro stations at four new locations in Al Wakra, Al Qassar, Lusail and Education City, in order to encourage vehicle owners to use the modern public transportation system to and from their destinations in less time and at a lower cost, the ministry has said in a statement.
"This will help further improve services on public roads and at major intersections by achieving smoother traffic flow, less congestion and less carbon emissions. It also provides a significant enhancement to Qatar’s public transportation network and Doha Metro services for citizens, residents, visitors and FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 fans," the statement explains.
The MoTC has already completed project works in Al Wakra and the free parking spaces have been used during the recent 24th Arabian Gulf Cup. Works at the three other locations are scheduled to be completed in the first quarter of 2020.
The 'Park and Ride' project is "another example of the considerable attention" paid by the ministry to modern, sustainable and eco-friendly public transportation systems.
"The MoTC is continuously working to improve public transit services and increase ridership over the coming years. For this to happen, the MoTC provides high-quality transportation services and modern parking facilities that are strategically distributed across the country and accessible for everyone easily and affordably," the statement adds.
