Qatar Charity (QC) yesterday said its office in the Gaza Strip, with support from benefactors in Qatar, managed to renovate 215 homes for poor families living under harsh economic and social conditions.
The total cost of the project, which was recently completed, amounted to around QR5.5mn and the initiative benefited some 1,742 people, according to a statement by QC.
Other home renovation projects are expected to be implemented in the Gaza Strip in the current year to contribute to improving the living conditions of poor and needy families.
Mohamed Abu Haloub, director of QC’s office in the Gaza Strip, said the project contributed effectively to creating a healthy environment suitable for the poorest people by providing services and aid in the field of home renovation for the poor.
He noted that Qatar Charity would spare no effort in providing safe and secure housing for poor and needy families to ensure a decent life for them.
He added that the main factor that had driven the decision to renovate the homes was the deteriorating economic and living conditions of underprivileged families in the Gaza Strip.
The beneficiaries of the project expressed their pleasure at moving to safe homes, as they were earlier used to suffering from rainwater flowing into their homes every winter.
Fadel al-Wahidi, a beneficiary of the home renovation project who lives in the Jabalia refugee camp in the northern Gaza Strip, thanked the people of Qatar, saying: “Thank you for protecting my family and children from the risk of seasonal drowning as a result of rainfall.”
Ayad al-Nunmim, 40, a breadwinner for a family of five who was awarded a restoration grant, added: “We did not dream of such a beautiful house before.” His family would life a decent live due to this project, he added.
