ICAI Doha Chapter holds AGM

 The Doha Chapter of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) organised virtually a seminar on “Union Budget 2021”, followed by Annual General Meeting (AGM) on February 14.
More than 150 chapter members who are noted finance professionals from leading organisations, and students attended.
Indian ambassador Dr Deepak Mittal, the chief guest, was introduced by the immediate past chair Sandeep Chowdhary. The envoy described the Union Budget 2021, as pathbreaking, paving the way for a self-reliant India. He also termed the budget as visionary and progressive, with a view to rejuvenate and ramp up infrastructure development as a slew of big-ticket projects were announced.
The keynote speaker, T N Manoharan (past president of ICAI and ex-chairman, Canara Bank, India), briefed the audience about the economic scenario due to the Covid-19 pandemic and how the union budget aspires to keep the Indian economy back on the growth trajectory, while also allocating $5bn for Covid-19 vaccination.
He mentioned about the proposal of Development Finance Institution and Asset Reconstruction Company as the visionary steps in the banking and financial service sector reforms. Manoharan also explained the budget proposals in the education, information technology and agriculture sectors.
The AGM saw the adoption of the accounts and election of the new management committee. The election was conducted by Rukkaiya Pachisa, past chairperson of the chapter. The new office bearers are Nirlep Bhatt (chairman), Ankit Agarwal (vice chairman), Vignesh Kalyanraman (secretary), Kamlesh Tibrewal (treasurer), Kishore Alex, Arun Somanath, Dewakinandan Tibrewal and Rakesh Bahety (committee members).
Alex welcomed the audience and Agarwal proposed a vote of thanks. The Doha Chapter of ICAI, established in 1981, is the oldest among the 38 overseas chapters. The current membership of the Chapter is approximately 300. The Chapter is actively involved in enhancing and updating the professional knowledge of its members, local professionals and non-members. Doha Chapter of ICAI is the first professional membership body to be registered with Qatar Financial Centre.
