The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) yesterday announced the completion of main upgrade works at Al Tarfa Intersection and its infrastructure service utilities, in addition to the construction of new service roads.
The recently completed intersection and roads are now open to traffic as part of the Road Improvement Works in Various Areas of Greater Doha Project - Phase 5, Ashghal has said in a statement.
Essa Sultan al-Hillabi, project engineer in the Roads Projects Department at Ashghal, highlighted the importance of Al Tarfa Intersection.
The recently opened intersection provides a direct link to Al Tarfa Street, Jeryan Nejaima Street as well as the street leading to Wadi Al Banat area known as Leawaina Street, which accommodate a significant volume of traffic.
He noted that the intersection directly serves important educational institutions such as Qatar University (QU), College of Arts and Sciences and Doha Institute for Graduate Studies
Al-Hillabi said that Al Tarfa Intersection provides a link to the Jeryan Nejaima and Wadi Al Banat areas while also facilitating access to Abdullah Bin Khalifa Stadium and Doha Golf Club.
He explained that the completion of the upgrade works at Al Tarfa Intersection has significantly enhanced traffic flow and reduced congestion in the area, especially that the project had aimed to improve traffic flow and increase vehicular capacity.
Al-Hillabi said that in line with Ashghal’s support for local manufacturers and the Ta’heel initiative, which was launched by the authority in 2017, local materials and manufacturers were relied on for most of the project’s work.
Materials and elements supplied by local manufacturers included sewage, surface water and rain water drainage pipes, in addition to lighting poles and luminaires. The Qatari component in the project was 80%.
Besides upgrading the intersection, a total 2.3km of road works and the construction of new service roads, the project’s scope of work also included the installation of a new lighting system and the upgrade of infrastructure utility services. Infrastructure services’ enhancement works comprised the upgrade of the surface and storm water drainage and treated sewage effluent lines in addition to protecting electricity and telecommunications services lines and upgrading water lines, Ashghal said.
Directional signs and markings were also provided on the road.
